Des Moines
The Moines is the capital and the largest city in the US state of Iowa with a population of about 215,000. The name of the city dates back to the Des Moines River, which flows through the city, arguing about the importance of the name. One possibility is that "of the Moines" is derived from the Trappist monks (Moines de la Trappe), that is, "of the monks". Another possible significance comes from the "Moingona" Indians, who had built their tomb hills here.

background
The Fort Des Moines was founded in 1843 at the confluence of the "Des Moines River" with the "Raccoon River". It should help to control the Sauk and Meskwaki Indians who have been resettled from their traditional country in the east of Iowa. In 1846 the fort was abandoned after the Sauk and Meskwaki were moved back to Indian territory. In 1851, Fort Des Moines was declared a city and the name of the city was shortened to "Des Moines".
Soon after, coal was found in the territory of the city. These deposits were dismantled from 1864 onwards, but they were largely exhausted as early as 1908. In the course of the 20th century numerous insurance companies settled in Des Moines, as well as companies from the logistics and data processing industries. They gave the city a reputation as the country's most prosperous city.
